History

Hedge laying is a traditional country craft dating back over many centuries. An iconic sight in the British countryside, hedges provide a barrier and shelter to grazing stock. Hedges are also an important habitat for wildlife such as small mammals and birds.

During the post war period many hedges were removed or neglected due to the agricultural revolution. Farming patterns changed and mechanisation increased. The current trimming techniques cut the top and sides of the hedge and over time gaps will appear at the base. If left untrimmed then the hedge will grow into a line of trees.

Laying the hedge will fill the gaps and stimulate it's growth. The hedge will become stock proof again and more manageable. Generally, hedges should be re-laid every twenty years or so.
